On the 7th of June 2017, Edge of Africa’s hometown Knysna was badly affected by an uncontrollable and devastating fire brought on by severe winds and heat. Our volunteers and co-ordinators were fortunate enough to leave our lodge safely with all of their belongings, others have not been so lucky. Over 10 000 people were evacuated from their homes and an estimated 3000-4000 people lost everything they own. Our volunteers have been working hard since trying to help people who have been effected by the fire to rebuild their lives.
We packed clothes, blankets, toiletries and food in bags to donate to people that had lost all their belongings, along with hundreds of other people in the community.
We drove to the Township which had lost many homes due to the fire, to see what they needed to help the homeless.
We also visited the local animal sanctuary, to help care for the animals that had been left traumatised by the fire. Some were strays, some had lost their owners, and some were there temporarily as their owners had lost their homes.
We made soup for the volunteers that had been working all day and night to help the thousands of people who had lost everything.
We have also set up a desk where people can sign up to volunteer around the town.
