The importance of TB screening in South Africa

Tuberculosis, also known as TB, is an infectious disease that ravages lung tissue and can spread in many more organs. This disease is affecting over nine million people worldwide. It was the cause of 1.4 million deaths in 2010 and 95% of these deaths occurred in third world countries. That being said, South Africa has identified tuberculosis as an urgent problem to be resolved, as South Africa is ranked third in most threatened countries by tuberculosis. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is very aware of South Africa’s situation and mentions that he urges South Africans to regularly test for TB and AIDS. The medical institution continues to search for a cure and ways to fight these diseases.

HIV and AIDS are also primary concerns for the country and often people with HIV/AIDS are prone to getting tuberculosis. In fact one of the main causes of death of people with HIV is TB. It is important that South Africans go to clinics regularly for TB check-ups. The community must be aware of this disease and know the symptoms for them to receive treatment right away.

EDGE of AFRICA, a volunteer based company, runs a variety of community projects and one in particular is TB screening in local townships. Essentially, the volunteers go door to door asking the locals questions about basic symptoms they may have. If a person corresponds to these symptoms, EDGE of AFRICA strongly encourages the person to go to a clinic for further investigations and for them to receive treatment. The volunteers of EDGE of AFRICA, being a very proactive volunteer organisation, conduct TB screening twice a week, visiting approximately 15 houses a day. TB is a main concern for EDGE of AFRICA and their volunteers understand the necessity of TB screening in the community. They are driven to make a positive impact by consulting as many houses as possible.
